Senior Director - API, Open Banking eco-system

Job description

The Senior Director of API & Open Banking Ecosystem will lead one of our leading banking client’s global strategy, design, and execution of open banking and API-driven initiatives. You will drive the development and expansion of the bank’s API ecosystem to enable seamless integration with partners and accelerate digital transformation.
The role requires deep Tech expertise in API platforms, financial ecosystems, open banking regulations, and developer engagement strategies, combined with strong commercial acumen and leadership capabilities.

 

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Define and execute the global API and Open Banking strategy aligned with the bank’s digital and business transformation goals.

  • Champion open innovation and embedded finance partnerships to expand the bank’s reach across ecosystems.

  • Drive adoption of standardised APIs across products, channels, and geographies to enable interoperability and faster innovation.

  • Establish governance frameworks for API lifecycle management, compliance, and third-party integrations.

API Platform & Product Management

  • Oversee the design, development, and management of the bank’s API platform, marketplace, and developer portal.

  • Define API product roadmap in collaboration with business, IT, risk, and compliance stakeholders.

  • Ensure secure, scalable, and performant API infrastructure that meets business and regulatory standards.

  • Drive API monetisation strategies and usage analytics to measure ecosystem value creation.

Ecosystem Development & Partnerships

  • Build and nurture relationships with fintechs, aggregators, and technology partners to co-create new value propositions.

  • Lead initiatives to onboard and support external developers through sandbox environments, SDKs, and developer communities.

  • Represent the bank in open banking forums, regulatory discussions, and industry collaborations.

  • Collaborate with internal business units to identify new partnership opportunities leveraging APIs and open data.

Regulatory & Compliance Oversight

  • Ensure adherence to open banking regulations (e.g., PSD2, HKMA, MAS, etc.) and data privacy standards.

  • Work closely with Legal, Compliance, and Risk teams to establish appropriate frameworks for third-party access, consent management, and data governance.

People Leadership & Culture

  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing global team of API engineers, product managers, and partnership leads.

  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and developer-first thinking across the organisation.

  • Drive cross-functional alignment between technology, product, operations, and compliance teams.

 

What You Bring
  • 12–18 years of experience in digital banking, API platforms, or open banking ecosystems, with at least 5+ years in a leadership role.

  • Proven track record of building large-scale API or developer platforms in financial services or fintech environments.

  • Strong understanding of open banking standards, API security (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect), and data privacy frameworks.

  • Experience working with PSD2, HKMA, MAS, or global open banking initiatives preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage strategic partnerships, vendor relationships, and cross-border teams.

  • Strong business orientation with an understanding of P&L impact, monetisation, and ecosystem economics.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills at senior executive levels.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Business, or related field (Master’s degree or MBA preferred).
